With advances in Genetic testing, an understanding of genetic principles is becoming an increasingly important part of healthcare. Genetic testing is changing the way physicians are diagnosing certain diseases, but also raises important ethical issues regarding unexpected findings and informed consent. These advances can place clinicians in a better position to understand prognosis and communicate this information to patients and families. In some instances, genetic diagnosis can lead to focused preventive as well as treatment strategies for patients and their family members.
Practitioners need to understand not only how genomic information can drive diagnosis and treatment, but how to best address uncertainty and engage patients and families in the consent process to best meet their personal needs.
